The hydration crystals are re-hydrated with water and given to roaches and other small creatures that drink water but may drown in water. These are the large crystals, the smaller crystals tend to be a little slimy. To hydrate , add more water than is needed , then strain out the water. This will ensure that the crystals are fully hydrated.
